256 - Counting the Omer

I’ve never counted the Omer, so this year I’m going to give it a try. The idea of redefining time by sanctifying it appeals to me. Once an obstacle has been surmounted, we are faced with what to do next. Marking the journey of discover with a daily blessing might just make the trip easier.

Two Hundred Fifty-Six

Counting the Omer

I praise You, Holy One, for days to number,
I thank You for time to examine and refine;
You give me this length of days to count,
You foster my awakening.

Fate’s enslavement bound me in hopelessness,
Your strong hand severed my despair;
Now I begin the building days of my freedom,
Help me lift myself toward dignity.

I tally my steps toward the future,
I lay these days end to end as talismans;
In love, You decreed this reckoning,
The sum of weeks affirms my deliverance.

Now I guard this accumulation of days,
They are slivers of my deepening awareness;
Daily I polish them to a glowing luster,
Until they reflect the light of heaven’s crown.
