210 - Acceptance

What do we do when we know we won’t get better? I often think of this, not only in relation to my own life, but also when I pray for many people who are living with chronic conditions and disability. Our traditional prayer, the Mi Sheberakh, asks for a complete healing of body and soul. Maybe what we are looking for is a restoration of wholeness, that divine state where we can accept what is and be sustained.

Two Hundred Ten

Acceptance

I do not ask for the easy path:
Already my challenges have denied it.
Move me forward from regrets,
Finding dignity within my limitations.

For it is not You, Holy One,
Decreeing my pain, my troubles;
It is only circumstance, randomness,
Not divine plan or punishment.

Instead You offer myriad answers,
Coping skills and strategies;
Your strong hand is outstretched,
Faith supports me as I journey.

The path I travel leads to wholeness,
New definitions to describe my life;
Not cure but gentle acceptance as my lamppost,
Easing me forward, lighting my way.
