PSALMS
207 - God's Names
How can we describe God? When we ascribe God with human images and human emotions, we are using the only vocabulary we have to try to grasp what is infinite. Does this diminish God? Or does it place God into the context of our lives, giving us the chance to verify a living relationship with our Creator. When I write psalms, I think of all the ways to describe God. I cannot embrace them all, for God is beyond all. But each word gives me the opportunity for an intimate conversation.
Two Hundred Seven
God’s Names
I lift my thoughts to the Holy One,
Seeking Names to outline my praises;
You are my Answer and my Questioning,
My steady Rock and my careful Path.
All that I am reflects Your creation,
For You are Life-Giver, Author;
All I shall be flows from Your strength:
Compassionate One, Your gifts are boundless.
As Light before me, You tame the darkness,
Releasing my soul from its doubts;
You are the Warmth of eased worry,
Spreading a blanket of Your kind regard.
Open my lips to images of wonder,
Though I cannot contain You within these words;
You are Infinite, Beloved, True,
Welcoming my prayerful striving.
