88 - Rosh Chodesh Sivan
We attended an open house on Memorial Day for cousin Toby, who just graduated from Carnegie Mellon University. Of course, I remember her birth - she is several months younger than E.G. - and share her parents’ pride in her accomplishments. Other cousins were there as well, along with aunts and uncles, grandparents and friends. I had a chance to talk with one cousin whose father is ill, perhaps approaching his final illness. So much of what happens can be looked upon as chance, until we reach for a deeper answer to our eternal questions. How we nurture each day and each opportunity can lead to a fullness in our lives, no matter what stage we are entering.
Eighty-Eight
Rosh Chodesh Sivan
We turn the earth and plant the seeds;
We wait for sun warmth and soaking rains
To nurture our labors and send down roots.
So do we wait for the Eternal.
For You have planted within us
The need for wisdom;
You have planted within us
The need for love.
We fear for hail and wind,
We fear for lack of rain.
We hover over our fields,
Praying to the Eternal.
You do not stifle our fears,
You call us to face them;
You do not indulge our longings,
But reassure us as we discover.
We tend our growing fields.
We trust in You as we work and worry;
We trust in Your goodness
As we send down our own roots.
Deep, deep, into the heart of the Eternal,
Who calls us to learn and to love;
Deep, deep, into our own hearts,
As we nourish our growing devotion.
