74 - Rosh Chodesh Adar
The Hebrew month of Adar begins on Wednesday, February 17. Adar is the almost-Spring month that contains the joyous holiday of Purim, which commemorates the deliverance of the Jews of ancient Persia through the deeds of the heroine, Esther and her cousin, Mordechai. Esthers story reminds us to have the courage to challenge fate, the faith to advocate for what is right. As we fight illness, we become like Esther, we put on her garment of strength and hope.
Seventy-Four
Rosh Chodesh Adar
Sharp sunlight contradicts icy wind,
Splits into dancing rainbows
As it falls through melting icicles.
So, You bring us Adar.
We praise You, Light Giver,
As You temper our days with gladness.
Above grimy snow, a cardinal
Takes wing singing his spring song,
Calling new life, new creations.
So, You bring us Adar.
We praise You, Mystery Maker,
When You call us to witness creation.
In the midst of the destroyers,
The heroines and heroes appear
To give courage to Your people.
So, You bring us Adar.
We praise You, Eternal Defender,
As our hearts are made strong.
In the shifting days of almost spring,
We bend to changing realities,
We stand lightly, loosely;
You do not let us fall.
Move us into Adar, Beloved One;
Move us into changes and mysteries,
Flashes of brilliance to guide us
As we honor and praise You.
